The Draa Valley: Agdz, Zagora and the desert route
Place Agdz, Zagora and Tamgroute in your Morocco itinerary. Understand how a valley journey differs from the Foum Zguid approach to Chigaga.
A valley is part of the journey
The Draa Valley brings palm groves and settled landscapes into a southern Morocco itinerary. It is not simply a label for the dunes. The Moroccan tourist office presents its palm groves alongside the wider region’s rocky landscapes and desert areas.
When comparing a tour, separate the valley stops from the time spent in a desert camp. A programme can mention several places while leaving very little time to explore any one of them. Ask which stops involve a visit, which are viewpoints and which are simply passed on the road.
Agdz: understand the stop
Agdz is a name you may see on a Draa Valley route. Ask whether the programme includes a walk, a meal or an overnight stay. Those are different experiences even when they share the same map label.
If time in a palm grove matters to you, ask for it to be part of the schedule. Respect cultivated plots and the paths indicated locally; an oasis is a working landscape as well as a view.
Zagora: a gateway, not the whole desert
Zagora is a town and travel gateway. A “Zagora desert tour” does not by itself identify the dune area or the camp you will visit. Request the actual overnight location and the duration of any camel ride.
For a journey continuing to M’Hamid or Chigaga, confirm the later road and off-road stages separately. Do not assume every tour using Zagora in its title reaches the same dunes.
Tamgroute: cultural stops need time
Tamgroute, also written Tamegroute or Tamgrout, appears in the national tourist office’s account of the valley’s cultural heritage and historic library. Confirm which places can be visited when you travel, and allow time for the visit rather than treating the stop as a photograph taken from the vehicle.
Draa route or Foum Zguid route?
Our standard Foum Zguid departures approach the desert through Iriki. A route using the Draa Valley and M’Hamid is a different arrangement, not a spelling variant of the same transfer. Discuss your starting city, finishing point and desired stops together.
