Merzouga and Erg Chebbi: village, dunes and trip planning
Understand Merzouga and Erg Chebbi when comparing them with Chigaga and Iriki, without confusing destinations or assuming the same tour arrangements.
Village and dune area
Merzouga is a village associated with visits to the Erg Chebbi dunes in southeastern Morocco. The two names often appear together: one identifies the settlement and the other the dune area. Neither is another name for Erg Chigaga.

Compare the actual experience
A destination name cannot tell you the size of a group, how long you ride, whether you walk with the caravan or how the camp is arranged. Ask these questions for either dune area. A short sunset ride and a multi-day walking trek are different products even if the photographs look similar.

Avoid a route chosen only by a photograph
Dune images can be difficult to locate without a reliable caption. Ask where the photograph was taken and whether it represents the camp or route being offered. An image of a large dune does not guarantee that you will camp beside it.
Use your available nights and starting city to compare complete journeys. A cheaper local camp stay can become a different overall budget once transfers and extra road nights are included.
When to discuss Chigaga instead
If you want to explore the Iriki approach from Foum Zguid, or combine rocky terrain with several days of caravan walking, examine those programmes directly. Compare published inclusions and ask for any changes before choosing. Avoid assuming one region is always quieter or better: dates, route and operator arrangements matter.
