Marrakech to the Sahara: choose the experience first
Understand the difference between a camel ride near Marrakech and a Sahara journey, and plan transfers, nights and time in the dunes.
A departure city is not a desert destination
Marrakech is the starting point for many different experiences. A short camel ride near the city and a journey to Chigaga should not be compared by price alone. Begin with where you will spend the night and how much time you want in the desert.
On a multi-day programme, distinguish the road journey, any off-road transfer, the camel activity and the camp stay. “Three days” describes the whole trip; it does not mean three days walking with a caravan.
Agafay and the Palmeraie
Agafay is a rocky desert experience in the Marrakech region. The Palmeraie refers to the city’s palm-grove area. They are separate settings and neither name means the large Saharan dunes of Chigaga or Erg Chebbi.
If you have only a short window in Marrakech, compare nearby experiences on their own terms: transfer arrangements, actual riding time, meal inclusions and the setting. Do not book a nearby outing expecting a Sahara crossing.
The road south
A southern itinerary may cross the High Atlas and include Aït Ben Haddou or Ouarzazate before continuing towards a desert gateway. Our Marrakech catalogue includes programmes reaching Foum Zguid and Iriki. Read the individual route because the same duration can hide a very different balance of driving and visits.
Choose your minimum number of nights in the desert before adding sightseeing stops. An extra night on the road is not an extra night at the camp. A longer itinerary can be worthwhile if it adds the activity you actually want.
Questions that make tours comparable
Ask for a written sequence of overnight locations and the expected camel activity on each day. If riding is optional, find out whether a walking alternative is available and what changes to the route it requires.

- How many nights are in dunes rather than towns?
- Is the camel experience a short ride or a travelling trek?
- What is the return plan and where is the final drop-off?
