Travellers walking a high dune crest in Erg Chegaga in morning light

The two-day tour shows you the erg; the three-day version lets you live in it. The extra day removes the clock: you wake in the dunes with nowhere to drive, walk the big crests while the sand is still cool, and spend the heat of the day in the shade of the sacred oasis of Oum Laâlag.

Both nights are at our bivouac at the foot of the dunes — deliberately the same camp, so no time is lost re-pitching and day two stays free. On the way home, a stop on the Jbel Bani plateau shows you antelope and hunters carved into the rock by people who knew a greener Sahara.

Highlights

  • A whole day in Erg Chegaga without driving
  • Morning walk of 1.5–2 hours through the big dunes
  • Lunch and siesta at the sacred oasis of Oum Laâlag
  • Ancient rock carvings on the Jbel Bani plateau
  • Two nights in the bivouac, full board from dinner day 1 to breakfast day 3

Itinerary

Day 1 — Foum Zguid · Lac Iriki · Erg Chegaga

Early-afternoon departure across Lac Iriki and the Colorado marocain, arriving at the dunes for sunset. Camel ride, Berber dinner, first night at the bivouac.

Day 2 — Dune walk and the Oum Laâlag oasis

Sunrise, then a 1.5–2 hour walk through the large dunes at an easy pace. Drive to the sacred oasis of Oum Laâlag for lunch and a rest in the shade; return along the ridges for the second night.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the third day add?

The morning walk in the erg, the Oum Laâlag oasis and the rock carvings — the parts of the desert a two-day trip has no time for.

How fit do I need to be?

The walk is about 90 minutes to two hours at a relaxed pace, barefoot or in light shoes; a six-year-old manages it without noticing. A camel can replace the walk if you prefer.

Same camp both nights?

Yes, on purpose: no tents to re-pitch and day two stays completely flexible. A nomad-style second camp elsewhere is possible on request.

What should I pack?

A scarf, sunglasses, sunscreen, a fleece for the evenings, a headtorch and a power bank. From December to January nights drop below 8 °C — we provide warm sleeping bags; bring a hat.

Group size?

Maximum six people in one private 4x4. From four people the whole trip is effectively yours.
